But Daniel Torney, the technical director of the consultancy Cardno Converse All Star Shoes Black Leather ENTRIX, said his experience with public consultations over gas extraction in the US was that messages should be kept very simple. ''Don't overeducate,'' he told delegates. ''People generally don't feel they need a lot of education they know enough about these issues to be concerned.''
not price emissions.
''The idea that some people have that gas is going to be just a transitional source of fuel is misplaced,'' he told the Herald. ''I wouldn't want to put a number on it in terms of how many decades, but it will be for a very long period. Yes, renewable technology is improving all the time, but so is oil and gas technology.''
have got a new and potentially very large source of fossil fuels which is going to delay the transition to renewables by 20 to 50 years,'' he said.
Mr Byers said that gas was not just a bridging fuel that could be deployed before large scale renewable energy comes online, but a long term solution in itself.
steadily at 3.4 per cent a year, that $50 billion worth of coal seam gas projects were planned or under way, and that potential reserves, particularly of shale gas in Western Australia, would provide for the nation's energy security for a century.

Both coal seam gas and liquefied natural gas are expected to benefit in the short term from the price on carbon, because they generally emit fewer greenhouse gases than coal and at present they are cheaper than solar, wind or geothermal power.

The conference provided a forum for debate about climate change and environmental impacts within the industry. Several delegates told the Herald they felt if the public were made aware of the amount of safeguards against pollution, the coal seam gas and LNG industries would enjoy widespread support.
That view was challenged yesterday by the head of Australia's Climate Commission, Tim Flannery, who said Australia had signed the Copenhagen Accord, which plans to limit greenhouse emissions and hold global warming to 2 degrees.
''We have, very roughly, a carbon budget of a trillion tonnes for 50 years,'' Professor Flannery said. ''We have already chewed through a third of that budget in a fifth of the time available, and we have a political commitment to meet the target I'd also like to ask this industry if gas is a transitional fuel, when does the transition end?''
The executive director of the Western Australian gas exploration company Buru Energy, Eric Streitberg, said there was still a series of hurdles for the industry to overcome, including the possibility the massive expansion of gas could end up squeezing out renewable energy instead of coal.
''The IEA [International Energy Agency] is talking about a golden age of gas, and that is what I think we're going to,'' said David Byers, the chief executive of the Australian Petroleum Production and Exploration Association.
AUSTRALIA is about to enter a ''golden age of gas'' that will last for many decades, the head of the peak oil and gas industry body has declared.
