Gem of a season for Excavation
CMLA graduates and current senior players with the Akwesasne Outlawz, Tyler Barnhart and Nick Sanseverino, stepped in to coach the team. They worked hard developing systems and conditioning the players with practices three times a week.
Cornwall had a great celebration, knowing they had knocked off two higher ranked teams and for the first time in any of their lacrosse playing years, they were getting a chance to play in the semis and move one step closer to a medal.
It was a rough start to the provincial tourney, as the Celtics had to open against the top ranked Whitby 2 team, who two weeks earlier handed Cornwall an 11 2 loss.
Game 2 was played later in the day and the Celtics emerged with a 5 3 victory over Six Nations 2. Cornwall showed much greater discipline by taking only six minutes in penalties in the entire game compared to the opposition's 25. Jake Cook was on fire, scoring a hat trick in the win. Kolten Oakes Cook assisted on the first power play, while Jack Almond also got an assist and then set up Cook's second marker. Robbie Metcalfe put his team up 3 0, on a sharp pass from Emerson Lalonde. Tait secured the winner early in the middle period, on a great pass from Jock. Gaudreau was the playmaker on Cook's final power play goal to give the team two wins and a great first day of tournament play.

teams with lots of floor time once again, as the Celtics were assessed eight minutes in penalties. Gaudreau, with his breakout speed, ran the ball up the floor and scored to take the lead once again. It wasn't long before Whitby tied it up on the power play and then the final two minutes were all Cornwall. Jimmy Jock netted his second of the game, assisted by Taran Fiacco and Gaudreau. Ten seconds later, with the game tied and the crowd on its feet, Fiacco displayed his strength by charging through the opposition to score the winner. The Celtics were able to keep control of the game for the final minute and celebrated a 5 4 victory.
After sitting out a season due to low numbers, the Cornwall Minor Lacrosse Association was able to floor a bantam team this summer, though it took a bit of work.
The J. Bernier Excavation team still finished first in its pool for the quarterfinals. Redemption time was in order as two years ago, the 12 returning players had been ousted from the quarters by the same opposition, the Toronto Stars.

With 11 players and their goalie returning from the 2012 peewee squad, the Celtics were able to recruit five new athletes to try the game the other boys loved.

The second period was all Celtics as they came out hot on the first shift. In what was arguably the best teamwork goal of the tournament, Cook made a perfect behind the back pass to Oakes Cook who quickly converted it across the house to Metcalfe, who one timed it past the Star's goalie. Cook then put his team ahead by driving down the floor and scoring unassisted. Later in the frame, Oakes Cook, picking up the ball in his own end, fired it down the floor to a streaking Tait. The ball bounced right in the net past a furious Toronto netminder and the crowd went wild with the Celtics up 3 1.
The Celtics faltered in their final pool game against a lower ranked team from Sudbury. In a sluggish, penalty filled game, Cornwall fell 5 2. Oakes Cook got both goals late in the third with assists coming from Cook and Forrester.
Early in the third, Tait got the eventual game winning goal on a great set up from Metcalfe and Mick Miller. The rest of the period was a tense back and forth game with Coir making many great saves to keep his team pumped. Late in the contest, the Celtics ran into penalty trouble and the Stars scored twice to make it 4 3 with only 29 seconds remaining. Captain Jack Almond won the next face off, ran down and fired one last goal past the Stars goalie with only 23 seconds left in the game to secure a 5 3 win.
The opposition came out strong, scoring in the first minute to set the tone. Cornwall capitalized on their only power play opportunity of the game when Converse All Star Leather Hi Navy Blue
During the second period, the man down teams displayed their effectiveness by overcoming six minutes in penalties. Whitby snuck one ball past netminder Zak Coir to go ahead 3 2.
The nerves were apparent as the game started and the Stars got on the scoreboard first with the only goal of the first period.
It was an exciting first period in the semifinal where many saves were made by Celtics netminder Coir (who was stellar in net all season) as well as the Beaches goalie. It wasn't until late in the frame that the opposition converted a power play opportunity into a goal. Two minutes later, they got another and the Celtics were down 2 0 at the end of the first.
Jimmy Jock fired one in on a set play from Carter Converse White Mens Sports Direct Tait and Tommy Forrester. Jake Cook put his team up 2 1 on a pass from Sam Gaudreau before Whitby came back to even the score, finishing the frame 2 2.
The J. Bernier Excavation Ltd. bantam squad made it to the semifinals at the provincials, a nice ending to a ride that almost didn't get started.
The dedication of the group showed at the culmination of the season, where the Celtics competed right through to the semifinals at the Ontario Lacrosse Festival in the 16 team C division.
It was quite a ride for the Cornwall Bantam Celtics this season.
